About Kentucky Wesleyan College

Kentucky Wesleyan College, more often referred to as simply KWC, is a private Methodist college in Owensboro, which is the 3rd largest city in the US state of Kentucky, by population, having a population estimated at a number of more than 55 000 inhabitants, during the 2009 census. Owensboro is the principal city of the Owensboro, Kentucky Metropolitan Statistical Area, and it is also the 2nd largest city in the Tri-State region of Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky after Evansville, Indiana.

 

KWC was founded by the Kentucky Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, in 1858, and it was originally located in Millersburg. The college first opened its doors to students in 1866, and in 1951 was moved to its present location in Owensboro. Currently, KWC is divided into 3 academic divisions: Social Sciences, Humanities and Fine Arts and Natural Sciences, and also offers Secondary Education Certification in Chemistry, Biology, English, History, and Math.

 

Athletics

The athletic teams at KWC are known as the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers, who compete in 13 sports in NCAA Division II and Great Lakes Valley Conference, including in men's basketball, in which they advanced to the Division II championship game six consecutive years (1998–2003), winning in 1999 and 2001, also winning six other championships (1966, 1968, 1969, 1973, 1987, and 1990) and being runners-ups in 1957. In total, KWC's men's basketball team has won eight NCAA Division II National Men's Basketball Championships, which is the most by any NCAA Division II School.
